July meeting
As an exercise in spontaneity during a recent meeting, members of the Point Pleasant Writers Guild took five minutes to write a composition beginning with the sentence: “Thunder rumbled in the distance.” The results were then shared and commented upon. Some of the stories were suspenseful, some were reminiscent of childhood, and all were well written and enjoyed.
Woodrow G. Moore, II, “Woody”, has written a ten-minute play which was recently performed at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City, the church pastored by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale for 52 years. The name of the play is “The Thinker & the Inquisitor and Love’s Afterthought”. When the performance was over and time was allowed for questions, one man made a beeline to Woody and his wife, Paula Gregory, and asked them if they knew the Mothman. What can we say, Mason County’s Myth has reached the Big Apple.
Valentine's Day is past, but love is still the subject of the day, it seems. Max Price read his poem, “The Sound of Love”. Dixie Flowers shared poems from two books she has had published. One, entitled “My Country”, is from a collection of poems written by her mother, “Religious Poems of Dolly Gibbs Turnbull”. The other poem, "Elvis is the King of Hearts", was written by Dixie herself. Her book, “Elvis Love Poems”, can be purchased from the author. Love in action: Dixie’s Elvis Fan Club raises money to support Little Victories Animal Rescue Group out of Barboursville. Ms. Flowers has offered to bring a few items of Elvis memorabilia to a future meeting of the Guild.
Meetings of the Guild are held at the Mason County Library in Point Pleasant each first and third Wednesday, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All writers are welcome to attend. Moore will be speaking to the Guild on the subject of song writing at the July 15 meeting of the Guild.
